Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Menifee, CA
We take great pride in our team of compassionate professionals and the culture of healing and renewal we build.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
DBT is an evidence-based form of behavioral therapy that combines principles of cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness, acceptance, and skills development.
Rather than simply telling someone to avoid a trigger, DBT helps them learn what to do when that trigger, craving, conflict, or difficult emotion occurs.
These skills can be especially valuable during residential addiction treatment, where clients have regular opportunities to practice what they learn with support from their treatment team.
How We Use DBT in Addiction Treatment
At Reviving You Recovery, dialectical behavior therapy is used to help clients better understand their emotions, recognize patterns that may contribute to substance use, and respond to difficult situations in healthier ways. DBT can be especially helpful when cravings, conflict, impulsive decisions, or emotional overwhelm have played a role in addiction.
We incorporate DBT into our structured treatment environment through group therapy, individual support, and daily opportunities to practice new skills. Clients learn how to recognize triggers, slow down before reacting, tolerate uncomfortable emotions, and communicate more effectively. Rather than simply avoiding difficult situations, DBT helps clients develop practical ways to move through them without automatically returning to drugs or alcohol.
During residential treatment, clients have the time and support to practice these skills consistently. A difficult conversation, a strong craving, or a moment of frustration can become an opportunity to use mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, or interpersonal effectiveness in real time. This helps clients move beyond learning the concepts and begin applying them to everyday experiences.
DBT is used alongside other evidence-based therapies as part of an individualized treatment plan. Depending on a client’s needs, it may be combined with cognitive behavioral therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, family involvement, and relapse prevention work. This allows our clinical team to address both substance use and the emotional or behavioral patterns that may make recovery more difficult.
As clients progress through treatment, the goal is to make these skills more practical and familiar. Clients can continue using what they learn to navigate relationships, manage stress, respond to triggers, and make healthier decisions as they prepare for aftercare and life outside of residential treatment.
DBT Skills We Practice at Reviving You Recovery
At Reviving You Recovery, DBT focuses on practical skills clients can use during treatment and continue applying throughout recovery. These skills are designed to help clients slow down before reacting, better understand what they are feeling, and make choices that support their recovery goals. Over time, DBT can help clients become more aware of emotional patterns, tolerate discomfort without immediately turning to substances, communicate more effectively, and respond to stress in healthier ways.

Mindfullness
Mindfulness helps clients stay present instead of becoming overwhelmed by the past or future. Clients practice noticing thoughts, emotions, cravings, and physical sensations without immediately reacting, creating space to choose a healthier response.

Emotion Regulation
Emotion regulation helps clients understand what they are feeling and how emotions may influence behavior. Clients learn to recognize triggers and respond more effectively to anger, anxiety, shame, frustration, and other difficult emotions.

Distress Tolerance
Distress tolerance helps clients get through difficult moments without making them worse. Clients build skills for managing cravings, stress, conflict, and emotional discomfort without immediately turning to drugs or alcohol.

Interpersonal Effectiveness
Interpersonal effectiveness helps clients communicate more clearly and build healthier relationships. Clients practice setting boundaries, expressing needs, managing conflict, and rebuilding trust in ways that support recovery.
Applying DBT Skills In and Out of Treatment
DBT is designed to give clients skills they can use beyond the therapy room. At Reviving You Recovery, clients practice these tools throughout treatment so they become easier to use when stress, cravings, conflict, or difficult emotions come up.
During treatment, DBT skills can help clients manage:
- Cravings and urges to use substances
- Anxiety, anger, shame, and frustration
- Conflict with family, peers, or staff
- Impulsive reactions and decision-making
- Stressful or emotionally overwhelming situations
As clients prepare to return to everyday life, these same skills can support healthier responses to work stress, relationship challenges, triggers, and unexpected setbacks. Mindfulness can help clients pause before reacting, distress tolerance can help them move through difficult moments, and interpersonal effectiveness can support stronger communication and boundaries.
The goal is for DBT to become more than something clients practice during treatment. These skills can continue supporting recovery as clients transition into aftercare, rebuild relationships, return to daily responsibilities, and work toward long-term stability.
